Local Attractions and Places of Interest

The Lake

Often referred to as the Hungarian 'Sea', with a surface area of 600 sq km, Lake Balaton is the largest lake in Central Europe. In comparison with other European lakes it is extremely clean and well maintained, and with an average water temperature of 25°C the lake is ideal for bathing and swimming, as well as sailing, fishing, and other watersports.

Balatonfured has several beaches (strands) where tourists and locals can spend their day relaxing in the sun, bathing in the lake, enjoying the sports facilities, and eating and drinking in the adjoining cafe's and restaurants. Set in tree-lined surroundings, two of the largest beaches are the Esterhazy Strand and the Kisfaludy Strand, both of which are conveniently located within close proximity to our guest house.

The Tagore Promenade and Pier

Named after the famous Hindu poet who was cured in the nearby cardiac hospital, this beautiful tree-lined promenade runs from the Esterhazy Strand to the pier, marina and beyond. Stroll along this route and take in the stunning views across the lake, stop at the many memorial statues and plaques, or just relax on the terraces of the many bars, café's and restaurants along the way.

For the more adventurous, pleasure cruises depart on a regular basis from the pier for trips around the lake, and yachts can be hired from the marina.

The Tihany Peninsula

Set on a hilly peninsula which juts out 5km into the lake, Tihany is famous for its Benedictine Abbey which was founded in 1055. Still functioning as an abbey, the church is well known for its echo. The last Habsburg Emperor of Austria Charles I was also held prisoner here.

Tihany is also the gateway to the south side of Lake Balaton, with the 10 minute ferry crossing leaving every half an hour from the tip of the Tihany peninsula.

The centre of Tihany, with its traditional restaurants, cafe's and shops is also famous for its breathtaking views over the lake.

The Wine Region

The Balatonfured-Csopak wine growing region is one of the twenty-two ancient wine-growing regions of Hungary and considered one of the finest. Set in the heart of the region is Balatonfured itself which has held the title of International Town of Grapes and Wine since 1987. Every August the town hosts the annual Wine Festival where wine growers from the region display their range of wines along the Tagore Promenade.

There are also numerous vineyards and wine cellars set within the picturesque countryside which are open to visitors throughout the summer offering free wine tastings.

Kossuth Lajos Natural Spring

Balatonfured was declared a spa town in the late 18th Century after the discovery that its natural mineral-rich thermal waters had curative properties. At the Kossuth Lajos well in the centre of Gyorgy (Health) Square locals come to fill their bottles and containers with the natural water. With its slightly reddish colour, the water is also used to treat patients in the well-renowned cardiac hospital nearby. Why not stop by and have a taste?

Annagora Aqua Park

Located within Balatonfured is the new state-of-the-art water park, featuring a wave pool, 8 slides, indoor pool, and two pools for young children. The aqua park also features an ice cave, saunas, steam cabins, and an aroma cabin, along with a range of restaurants, bars and shops.
